Magical Moment Mondays: DIY

DIY Painting ToolsMy husband Andy and I have been diy-ing (that’s do-it-yourself for the uninitiated) home projects since the day we bought our home 20 years ago. Our winter project this year has been repainting our interiors (see Magical Moment Mondays: Renovation). The transformations certainly are amazing but I think the main reason I love DIY projects so much is the great sense of satisfaction for having done them all by ourselves. First we start with a plan, then we go shopping for any needed materials and tools, then we get changed into work clothes and boots or sneakers and then we get to work!

If you have a partner in the DIY project it is much more fun. Andy and I have been playing our favorite music in the background so that we can groove and of course sing along while we are brushing and rolling paint (or spackling or caulking or sanding or all the other tasks involved in prepping the room). It is hard work, but together we are creating a great new feel for each room while we are also creating a magical experience. What kind of DIY projects do you want to do?

Work Boots: Still Life
By Jim Daniels

Next to the screen door
work boots dry in the sun.
Salt lines map the leather
and laces droop
like the arms of a new-hire
waiting to punch out.
The shoe hangs open like the sigh
of someone too tired to speak
a mouth that can almost breathe.
A tear in the leather reveals
a shiny steel toe
a glimpse of the promise of safety
the promise of steel and the years to come.

XOXO Rachel
