Romance is in the air all year in my opinion but there is nothing like the sultry weather of summer to really bring on the heat of love. It is also my favorite time to read romance novels. Enjoy them poolside, enjoy them surfside, or enjoy them snuggled comfortably in your favorite spot, you cannot fail to feel the love. Here are some of my go-to romance reads.
My number one selection is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin. I have read it so many times and it is absolutely swooningly lovely (Of course all the movie versions are also wonderful). I adore all of Austin’s books, but P&J is what I return to the most.
Elizabeth Peters’ Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first in the Amelia Peabody series and it is so much fun. I have re-read it the most of any of my books because it has a great pace and sets the stage for the wonderful romance between Amelia and “Emerson” (his first name is Radcliffe). It is filled with satire, comedy, romance and murder. How fun is that? If you like the first one, you will have 18 more books to enjoy!
Janet Evanovich is a Jersey girl—just like me—so I am particularly fond of her and her books. Evanovich’s early romance novels like Manhunt are all silly love comedies and worth a look if you have only read her Stephanie Plum series. And I do love her Plum series too, of course!
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger is a great read. And lest you think that time traveling sci-fi can’t be romantic, consider this novel. It was made into a movie that didn’t get publicity but I adored it (and I thought Eric Bana was great and Rachel McAdams just perfect. Rachel McAdams has been in so many romance movies—she just seems to fit the bill perfectly.)
Jennifer Crusie is another prolific romance writer whose books I have enjoyed. I like many of her older one like Anyone But You. You gotta love the dog Fred.
