Magical Moment Mondays: Flea Markets

Rachel at Country Living FairLast Saturday I was fortunate to attend the Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck, NY. The experience was indeed magical. Our friend Jon joined my husband and me for the day’s festivities that began with a yummy full breakfast (including a decadent walnut sticky bun) at The Village Diner in nearby Red Hook, NY. Then we were off and running to the big flea market!

Many antiques and plenty of handcrafted items were beautifully displayed throughout the event space. There were many moments when I was really quite overwhelmed by the wondrous items that we saw. My creative juices were revving high with all the input. There was so much that would be perfect for a country wedding. I got lots of ideas for things to DIY at home but really I wanted to buy one of—everything!

Bandana decorated hallsI found myself enjoying people watching as much as looking at the enticing objects. Women (mostly) of all shapes sizes and ages were wearing great outfits of flow-y dresses and shirts, country crafted hats and hair accessories, and lots of cowboy boots. I wished I had decked myself out as much as everyone else! I was tempted to go back on Sunday to prove my dressing acumen. (And I am just so slightly tempted to make the day-drive out to Columbus Ohio for the next Country Fair event in September.)

The most magical part was sharing the day of flea marketing with ones I love. Finding treasured objects is so much more fun when done with someone else—so true about much in life. I hope you can find a flea market in your neck of the woods to enjoy with your pals this summer!

We’re just like the antiques. We grow old and get scarred and beat up along the way, and the only question becomes whether we’re going to make it until we realize what we already have is valuable.

Sisters, girlfriends and troublemakers — you know who you are — you are fearfully and wonderfully made! In other words, God doesn’t make junk. Thankfully, his children do, and that’s why we have been blessed with flea markets just about everywhere.

There’s nothing worse than the one that got away. It haunts you for weeks like a bad dream, eats away at your psyche like a termite on softened wood.

I steal cracker packets. I hoard them. Once my collection is large enough, I’ll take them to the flea market and try to sell them.
